Computer and Internet Safety

With how easy it is to chat with people on the Internet through your computer, you have to make sure you are careful that you don’t give out too much of your information. It is getting easier for people to stalk others through social networking websites. If you have children that use the computer, you also need to protect them from revealing too much information.

The best thing you can do is to not put any of your personal information out there. It’s kind of hard with sites like Facebook, where people use that to reconnect with others from their past. However, if you have a Facebook account, make sure that it is set to private so that only your friends can see what it on your profile. Also, make sure you screen every friend request you get. Don’t just accept anyone as your friend just to get your numbers up. You want to make sure you know who they are and why they requested you as a friend.

Facebook profiles give tons of information if you aren’t careful. A person can find out what company you work for, which then can lead to them finding out the location of your work. They can find out where you hang out regularly by the pictures that you post. They can also send messages to people on your friends list that unsuspectingly might give them information about you.

It is easy to get carried away and lost within the world of information technology. You have to make sure you protect yourself, or you may wind up with unwanted attention.

As always, if someone is bothering you or making you feel uncomfortable, talk to the police about it. They will do what they can to ensure that you are safe. Just make sure you keep your information private over the Internet.
