Computer Safety

When using your computer, especially the Internet, you need to practice computer safety. There are many viruses and other harmful programs that can invade your computer. These programs can steal your personal information as well as infect other programs on your computer. By knowing what to look for and what to avoid, you can then prevent anything like this happening to you.

First, you want to make sure you install an antivirus program on your computer. There are many free programs available and they are also simple to install. Once you install the program, make sure it updates regularly to include the newest additions and viruses to check for.

Make sure you are careful with your email. If you receive an email on your computer email account from someone you don’t know, never open any attachments that the person has sent you. Many times people will send you an email with the subject being a short letter acknowledging that they know you. They will then ask you to open what they have sent you, and many times this is a virus that will infect your computer.

By knowing not to open suspicious emails, that prevents a big part of the problem. Make sure you immediately delete the email or even report it to your internet service provider. The sad part is that for every scammer they take down, there are always ten more in their place.

Make sure you keep informed about the latest computer scams and don’t fall for any hoaxes. Many times a scammer will send you an email saying that they know you and that they want to send you a huge amount of money if you will just help them out. Make sure you know that no one just hands out large amounts of money and that this has got to be a scam.
